Success for University of Bath graduate's 'Ordoo' app
Bath University graduate Tom Dewhurst has invented an app that saves time, helps companies to increase profits and allows independent businesses to digitise at an affordable cost.
What does it do?
Ordoo is a unique app which allows customers to order and pay for their food and drink whilst on-the-go. Ordoo is already partnered with many independent cafes and coffee shops in Bath and Bristol; check their map to see their current businesses.
Success and investment
Tom came up with Ordoo whilst studying Business Administration at the University of Bath. The company gained seed funding from the University’s Dragons’ Den competition, before gaining additional funding from Simpleweb, a tech development agency based in Bristol.
The app has since gained financial backing from a string of investors including LexAble CEO, Neil Cottrell, with whom Tom networked after attending Venturefest Wales in 2015. Ordoo already serves the Bath and Bristol area, but there are plans to expand to more cities including Cardiff and London. The company is currently based in the University of Bath’s Innovation Centre as part of the SETsquared partnership.
SETsquared and the Innovation Centre
SETsquared is an enterprise collaboration between 5 universities; Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Southampton and Surrey. SETsquared is helping companies raise millions of pounds in investment and finance, incubating them in Business Acceleration Centres in or near the 5 universities. It has recently been recognised as the no.1 global university business incubator.
The Acceleration Centres provide businesses with access to industry experts, mentors, investors, regular reviews, and physical or virtual office space, depending on their requirements. Bath’s Innovation Centre saw their businesses raise £20.5m in 2015, almost double that of 2014!
20% of these businesses are started within the universities themselves, like Tom’s, and SETsquared provides a tailored programme of Student Enterprise Support, ensuring students gain hands-on business experience to aid them in their own ventures.
How can you get involved with Ordoo?
Businesses that partner up will allow their customers to pre-order from their establishment, which should streamline the order process and reach more customers through the app’s interactive map.
Businesses can also digitise their loyalty schemes with the app, including interactive recognition software to welcome their customers and tailor promotions to them. Customers are even rewarded for sharing their experiences and pictures on social media!
