More robotics than Romans...
The Bath area has a particularly long and distinguished track-record in engineering design excellence, with a number of firms also manufacturing high-precision products. This track-record is in large part thanks to historic strengths across the physical sciences and mechanical, electronic and electrical engineering at the University of Bath.
Technological advances are being driven by research on subjects such as nanotechnology at the Universities of Bath, Bristol and the University of the West of England (UWE).
Cutting-edge defence equipment and services are being developed by firms such as BMT Defence Services, Horstman Defence Systems and Babcock International, which benefit from a strong Ministry of Defence and aerospace industry presence in the West of England (of the 12 largest aerospace companies in the UK, nine have major facilities in the South West of England and five are located in the Bristol and Bath City region, including Airbus UK, Rolls-Royce and BAE Systems).
Rotork, Rotary Precision Instruments, Polamco and Cross Manufacturing are among a number of international businesses designing and manufacturing high-precision components for a wide range of industries.
The Bristol and Bath City Region is at the heart of the largest cluster of microelectronics firms outside of Silicon Valley (source: Future Horizons). This has attracted such world-leading research organisations as HP Labs, Motorola, and Toshiba Telecoms Research Europe. Well-known international brands such as Intel and Broadcom are also based in the area.
Engineering and electronics firms based here are part of a thriving ecosystem of technologists and creative thinkers across the West of England, including Bath's significant local knowledge-base in software design and development.
