TedxYouth@Bath: Ideas Worth Spreading
Many of you will already be familiar with TED talks. The widely popular events began in 1984 as a conference for Technology, Entertainment & Design (TED), and today has blossomed into talks that cover a huge variety of topics in over 100 different languages.
What's TEDx Youth?
TEDx is a program run by TED to support communities, organisations and individuals to connect and engage in a TED-like experience. TEDx events are planned independently, but operate under a free licence granted by TED.
TEDxYouth is, as the name suggests, a TEDx event aimed at young people. TEDxYouth@Bath offers free tickets for 16-19 year olds, including 900 free allocated places for local school’s sixth forms, but the event is open for anyone to attend- although unfortunately over 19s require a full-price ticket! (Concession tickets are also available for £8.00). Don't panic if you can't make it; the whole day will be live-streamed.
This year’s TEDxYouth@Bath line-up fits the theme of “You Make a Difference.” They include incredible speakers such as Frank Gardner, the BBC journalist who was shot and paralysed whilst reporting in Saudi Arabia, who will talk about his fascination with the middle east and our misunderstandings of the area; Amiee Ansari, Director of Translators Without Borders, who will share her work helping refugees and asylum seekers at this hugely difficult point in their lives; and Jacob Dunne, who was sentenced to 30 months for manslaughter after a drunken assault, will speak about his restorative justice meeting with the parents of the young man he killed, and how it helped to turn his life around.
See the full line-up of speakers on TEDxYouth@Bath's website. From entrepreneurs to explorers, poets to film-makers, there's something to inspire everyone, no matter what your interest.
Could You Give a TED Talk?
This year's event has a saved slot for a "student speaker" (under 19) to create a TED talk around their own "idea worth spreading." Submit your ideas before the 20th October, and you could win the chance to craft your speech with a talented speaker coach and deliver your idea to the crowd! Email firstname.lastname@example.org or fill out the form on their website if you're interested.
Tickets, Enquiries, Times and Dates
Running from 9.30am until 4.30pm, the event will take place on November 17th 2016.
